أبحرت الرحالة البريطانية المثيرة للجدل فريا ستارك في البحر الأحمر في نوفمبر 1934، ونزلت في عَدَن المرفأ الرئيسي للمحمية البريطانية في جنوبي جزيرة العرب، كانت المكتشفة النشيطة الجذابة الصغيرة قد حازت على شهرة، واختارت اليمن وبشكل خاص وادي حضرموت النائي مسرحاً لمغامرتها التالية.
ثار جدل كبير حولها في لندن، فتوقعوا أنها ستهبط بطائرتها الخاصة، أو ربما تأتي وهي تقود قافلة جمال، كان بعضهم على ثقة من أن وصولها لم يعنِ أيّ شيء سوى المتاعب، ولكن مع ذلك احتشد الجميع للقائها في مقر الإقامة البريطاني.
كان هدفها أن تجد مدينة "شبوة" الخفية، عاصمة مملكة حضرموت القديمة المسماة في الأسفار (حبس الموت)، وقد سماها بلينيوس سابوتا وهي المدينة التي زوَّدت قوافل البخور التي تمر عبرها، وكتب أنها احتوت على ستين معبداً وثروة لا توصف، لم يحصل أن وصل مستكشف أوروبي لتلك الواحة المفقودة منذ عهد بعيد في رمال الصحراء.
وكانت نيّة فريا أن تكون أول من يصل إليها، كانت خطتها أن تتسلق الجول العالي، وهو جرف فسيح يفصل ساحل المحيط الهندي عن وادي حضرموت، وهو الأطول والأخصب في جزيرة العرب، تطوّقه جُروف نمت على جوانبها نباتات البخور، فكانت حصيلة ذلك كله مغامرة ممتعة شائقة، لم يكن أقلها وقوع فريا في الحب بعَدَن.
