يتناول هذا الكتاب المقاربات المختلفة في دراسة ظاهرة الإسلام السياسي بوجه عام، وجماعة الإخوان المسلمين بوجه خاص؛ وتحقيقاً لهذه الغاية الاستقرائية الهادفة إلى تقديم رؤية متكاملة عن نشأة هذه الجماعة، يلقي الكتاب الضوء على الظروف التي أحاطت بنشأتها في مصر خلال الثلث الأول من القرن العشرين بأبعادها ومتغيراتها المختلفة في محاولة لمعرفة جذور الماضي القريب وتأثيراته في مسار الأحداث والمسوغات التي رافقت تطور الجماعة.
كما يُعالج الكتاب الأصول الفكرية للجماعة ومرجعياتها من خلال إلقاء الضوء على أطروحات مؤسس جماعة الإخوان المسلمين سيد قطب ودورها في توجيه مسارات الجماعة نحو العنف المسلح، وجعلها مُركباً بِنيوياً في خطابه الجماعة وأطرها الفكرية والمعرفية وسلوكها العام. ويتطرق الكتاب – في السياق ذاته –إلى أهم مُرتكزات الفكر الإخواني، إذ يستعرض المفاهيم والمصطلحات الأساسية للجماعة التي تتميز بعُموميتها وضبابيتها، وتزعم أصالتها في البيئة الشرعية والفقهية الإسلامية. ويخلص الكتاب إلى أن جماعة الإخوان المسلمين، وحركات الإسلام السياسي بوجه عام، تستغل أي أوضاع اجتماعية أو اقتصادية أو سياسية أو ثقافية في التمدد والانتشار في المجتمع، وتُوظفها بما يخدم مشروعها السياسي بالأساس الذي يستهدف الوصول إلى السلطة حتى لو كان ذلك على حساب الدولة الوطنية، وتدمير مُقوماتها الرئيسية.
