يعرض هذا الكتاب تاريخ الإسلام والثقافة العربية في أفريقيا منذ الفتح العربي حتى القرن التاسع عشر حين خضع المسلمون في أرجاء هذه القارة للاستعمار الغربي. وإذا كان المأثور العربي يقول: " ليس من رأي كمن سمع " فإن هذه المقولة تصدق تمام الصدق في تأليف هذا الكتاب؛ إذ اشترك المؤلف في بعثة طوفت بأفريقيا، وزارت كثيراً من دولها شرقاً وغربا، فرأت حياة إسلامية ناهضة، وشعوبا مستمسكة بدينها إلي أبعد الحدود، وثقافة إسلامية مزدهرة غالبت ثقافة الغرب فغلبتها. وعاد المؤلف وفي ذهنه صورة واقعية لا زيف فيها عن هذه الروابط الثقافية التي غالبت الزمن قرونا طويلة، لم تنفصم عراها ولم تهن قوتها، فاعتزم أن يتتبع تاريخ الإسلام في هذه القارة منذ البداية الأولي حتى العصر الحاضر، فأنفق أعواما طوالا حافلة بالجهد والعناء، حتى جمع شتات هذا الموضوع الغامض، وإحباط بنواحيه المختلفة، وأرخ للإسلام في أفريقيا علي مدي اثني عشر قرنا من الزمان، وقدم دراسة واسعة للتطورات العامة التي مرت بها الثقافة الإسلامية، وكيف كان انتشار الإسلام سببا لانتشار الثقافة العربية، بما تعنيه من آثار اجتماعية، واقتصادية، وسياسية. وبهذا الكتاب يكون المؤلف قد كشف معالم الطريق لمزيد من البحث والدرس والعناية بمستقبل هذه القارة التي انجابت عنها الظلمات بمشرق شمس الحرية من وادي النيل.
