في هذا الكتاب يتتبع أ. د "حسن أحمد محمود" تاريخ الإسلام والثقافة القريبة في القارة الإفريقية منذ الفتح العربي الأول حتى العصر الحاضر؛ بغية الكشف عن هذه القوة الروحية التي تجمع بين العرب والمغاربة والسودانيين والأحباش والصوماليين والزنجباريين وأهل كينيا ومسلمي غرب افريقيا.
يبدأ الكتاب بعرض تاريخ الإسلام والثقافة العربية في افريقيا منذ بدايات الفتح العربي حتى القرن التاسع عشر حين خضع المسلمون في أرجاء هذه القارة للإستعمار. وقد خصص الكاتب الباب الأول من هذا الكتاب لدراسة التطورات العامة التي مرت بها الثقافة الإسلامية في هذه الفترة والقوانين الطبيعية التي خضعت لها. فعرض لأهمية افريقيا للعالم الإسلامي، وأشار الى أن انتشار الإسلام كان انتشاراً لظواهر ثلاث: الثقافة العربية - الدين الإسلامي - اللغة العربية.
وأفرد الباب الثاني لانتشار الإسلام في مصر وبلاد المغرب على هدى ما انتهى اليه في الباب الأول، مع العناية بوجه خاص بأثر كل من مصر والمغرب في انتشار الإسلام في بقية أجزاء القارة.
أما الباب الثالث، فخصص لدراسة انتشار الإسلام في غرب افريقيا . أما انتشار الإسلام في سودان وادي النيل فقد كان حديث الباب الرابع، واقتصر الحديث في الباب الخامس على دراسة انتشار الإسلام في بلاد الحبشة وشرق افريقيا.
