كتاب طبقات النحويين واللغويين لأبي بكر الزبيديّ مرجع أصيل لتراجم النحويين واللغويين، من عهد أبي الأسود الدؤلي في صدر الإسلام إلى عهد شيخه أبي عبد الله الرياحى إمام اللغة والنحو بالأندلس في القرن الرابع. عرفه القدماء من العلماء، ونقلوا نصوصاً في كتبهم، وتدارسوه في مدارسهم؛ نقل عنه من الفرضى في تاريخ علماء الأندلس، وياقوت في معجم الأدباء، والقفطى، إنباه الرواة، والسيوطي في بغية الوعاة، والمقريزي، في المقفى، وغيرهم؛ ولكنه في العصور الأخيرة ظل محجوباً عن العلماء والباحثين.
ويعتمد الزربيديّ في مادة كتابه هذا على مصدرين أساسيين:
المصدر الأول: الروايات الشفوية عن شيوخه بالأندلس، وبخاصة ما رواه عن أبي على القالى، وقد لزمه حين وفد على الأندلس؛ وعنه أخذ معظم معارفه في اللغة والنحو والشعر والأخبار، كما أخذ عن أحمد بن سعيد الصدفى، وقاسم ابن أصبغ، وأحمد بن حزم، وسعيد بن فحلون، وغيرهم من رجالات العلم واللغة والأدب والأندلس؛ ومادة هذه الروايات هي معظم الكتاب.
والمصدر الثاني: ما نقله عن الكتب مثل كتب الأغاني لإسحاق بن إبراهيم الموصلى، وطبقات الشعراء لابن سلام، والقراءات لأبي حاتم، وتاريخ اليعقو. وكتب الخليل في اللغة والعروض، وقد وشّى هذا الكتاب بالغرر والدرر من الأخبار ومحاسب الآداب؛ وساق كل ذلك في نهج سديد وتنسيق مطرد، فجاء فريداً في فنه وأسلوبه.
