موضوع هذا الكتاب كما يفصح عن ذلك عنوانه هو: التلقي عند حازم القرطاجني من خلال منهاج البلغاء وسراج الأدباء، والتلقي المقصود ههنا هو الذي أشار إليه حازم في منهاجه وعبر عنه بإستعمال مادة "لقي" ومشتقاتها لا كما يتداول في العصر الحديث، وحازم القرطاجني وإن كان كتابه يضعه مع النقاد العرب، ما دام جعل أكبر همه في مصنفه المذكور، تقويم الطباع بعدما أصابها الفساد والإختلال بسبب ماران على قلوب أهل الأندلس والمشرق خلال القرن السابع الهجري، إلا أنه "يختلف عن غيره من النقاد والبلاغيين في طريقة تأليف كتابه وفي تصوراته التي بنى عليها نظريته، وفي منهجه النقدي".
إن حازماً يخيب أفق إنتظار قارئه الذي دأب على مطالعة المصنفات النقدية العربية السابقة عنه، وهذا ما يدفع للقول، إنه "يطلع على الناس اليوم، بلون غريب من ألوان الدراسة الأدبية، يحتار كل متتبع له في الفن الذي يلحقه به، والكتب التي يصنفه إليها ويقارنه بها.
بناء على ما ذكر، تكونت لدينا فرضية مؤداها أن حازماً تميز عن غيره من النقاد، وظهرت على مصنفه غرابة، نظراً لطبيعة الدراسة الأدبية التي اشتمل عليها، والرؤية الجديدة التي تصدى بها لقضايا الشعرية.
وقد أسس هذه الرؤية على مقاييس مغايرة لما ألفناه عند نقادنا كما تعبر عن ذلك المدونة العربية.
إن حازماً كما افترض هذه الدراسة، يشترك مع النقاد في محاولة دراسة النص الشعري ورصد مظاهر إبداعه ورداءته، لكنه يختلف عنهم في إنتباهه إلى بعد آخر غير النص، يرتبط بالعملية الإبداعية ويقرر مصيرها، ألا وهو التلقي، إننا نصادف عند حازم عناية خاصة بالتلقي مما جعله يصوغ مفاهيم الشعر ويحدد ماهيته، ويعرب عن حقيقته بمقتضاه.
وقد بدا لنا أن المنهاج محاولة جادة وجديدة من حازم لتحديد ملامح نظرية في التلقي غير مسبوق إليها.
