أسهم المهتدون إلى الإسلام إسهامًا عظيمًا في الحركة الدعوية الإسلامية بنتاجهم العملي الذي قدموه للبشرية والذي يكشف عن مدى سعة ثقافتهم وتضلعهم في علم الأديان المقارن، الأمر الذي أفصح عن معايب هذه الأديان وكشف عوارها وخورها.
وقد امتدت هذه الطائفة المباركة، وبحوثها العلمية، منذ فجر التاريخ الإسلامي حتى العصر الحديث وهم كثيرون جدًا نذكر منهم على سبيل المثال: علي بن ربن الطبري كان نصرانيًا ثم أسلم سنة 247هـ، وكان عالمًا في الطب والانجيل، كتب من الكتب في الطب الكثير أهمها: كتاب فردوس الحكمة ونشره الدكتور محمد الزبير الصديقي في برلين، وكتب في علم الأديان كتابين من أروع ما كتب، وقد اعتمد عليه معظم من كتب في هذا العلم من بعده دون الإشارة إليه أو التصريح، وهما: الدين والدولة في إثبات نبوة سيدنا محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم"، وهو سفر عظيم القيمة طبع بتحقيق الأستاذ عادل نويهض في دار الآفاق ببيروت، الرد على النصارى، وهي موضوع دراستنا في هذا الكتاب.
وقد كان هذا الكتاب أصلًا وعمادًا لمعظم المهتدين إلى الإسلام في كتابتهم في هذا الحقل الديني، وإن تصفحًا بسيطًا لهذه الكتابات ليدرك منه ذلك، ومما يدل على أهمية هذا السفر وقيمته العلمية، استدلال صاحبه بالنصوص الانجيلية الأصلية المنقولة عن النسخ السريانية والعبرانية واليونانية، والتي فقد أغلبها، مما يكسب هذا الكتاب وثائقية علمية.
يقول ابن ربن: (وقد دعتني الغاية بهذا الأمر إلى أن تقصيت الانجيل، وجميع كتبه، وكتب يونس، وغيره تقصيًا، وقلبت جميع ذلك قلبًا..). ولقد بحثت فيما استشهد به علي بن ربن من الفقرات الانجيلية فوجدتها لا تخلو عن نوعين: نوع عثرت عليه في الأناجيل الأربعة يتفق معها في اللفظ وبعضها يختلف كثيرًا في اللفظ ولكنه يؤدي نفس المعنى الموجود، ونوع لم أعثر عليه في الأناجيل الموجودة. ولعل مرد ذلك اعتماد المؤلف على الترجمات القديمة التي لم تصل إلينا، وإذا وضعنا في اعتبارنا أن اختلاف النسخ المترجمة حاليًا يوجد فيه مثل هذا، كان ذلك مسوغًا لعدم وجود أمثال هذه الفقرات الانجيلية. إلى جانب ذلك كله أن الكتاب كان معدودًا ضمن مفقودات التراث العربي مما يجعل الظفر به غنيمة تستحق العناية والدراسة.
