يحتوى الكتاب على ست وثلاثين قصة قصيرة متفاوته الاحجام وتدور كلها حول العلاقات بين الرجال والنساء وقد يظن البعض ان هذه العلاقات هى ما تحدث غالبا بين البشر فى كل مكان وزمان الا ان المؤلف يتناول فى مجموعته تلك العلاقات بطريقه مختلفه تماما كما انه يسردها من زاوية مختلفة فقد يتناول الموضوع من خلال وجهة نظر المراة نفسها واصفا بالتفاصيل الدقيقة مشاعرها المعقدة وذاكرا مبرراتها وقد يبدا باحدى قصصة بفكرة ويصل نتيجتها لفكرة اخرى تمام فى مفاجاة صادمة للقارى ويبدا قصته الاولى بعنوان حبل غليظ وعنق رقيق التى يذكر فيها كيف ان الام تعانى من بعد زوجها عنها تفاجئنا باتخاذ عشيق لها ثم المفاجاة الصادمة حين تقبل ابنها الصغير لما يخبر عمته بأمر امه التى تخبر والده بدورها ثم ياتى الاب ويبحث عن ابنه فتقتله الام ايضا حتى لا يكتشف امر قتله فتبلغ عنها ابنتها وتخسر الام فى لحظة كل شئ وتضع العائلة كلها بسبب ذلك ..
