دائماً ما يقع الحادث في وقتٍ لا يتوقعه أحد. حسناً، لو كان معلوماً قبل حدوثه فلن يعودوا يسمونه الحادث. ولكن خلافاً لذلك، لا يعد الحادث حادثاً بالنسبة لي؛ لأنني طالما علمتُ، عن طريق غريزتي الحيوانية، بقدوم مصيبة جديدة قبل وقوعها. إني مدين بحياتي للغريزة هذه أصلاً، فدائماً ما أتشمم كالكلاب. حسناً؛ وقد باتت هذه عادتي. ولما يحين وقته أتوقع دائماً أن الحادث سيقع على رأسي كانهيار مبنى ما؛ ولهذا السبب ينشغل ذهني كله في أن أستجمع حواسي كلها كي أطلع على الحادث قبل وقوعه. وما إن يقترب أو أخمن وقوعه يبدأ قلبي بالخفقان، ويدق بقوة كوقع المطرقة. ثم أجلس على الأرض مثل دجاجة تريد أن تضع البيض. ولكن هل ستخرج تلك البيضة؟
