عُني القدماء بشعر الشنفري ورووه، وأكثر ما اثار إعجابهم (لامية العرب) التي عكف على شرحها وإعرابها طائفة من اللغويين، وروى المفضل الضبّيّ تائيته، وشرحها إبن الأنباري شرحاً وافياً وذكر جزءاً مهماً من أخباره وأشعاره، فضلاً عن اهتمام صاحب (الأغاني) بشعره وأخباره.
في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ الدكتور علي ناصر غالب دراسة في شعر الشنفري الأزدي (توفي سنة 70 للهجرة) بالإستناد إلى أهم مظانها من كتب الأدب واللغة، حتى وصف شعره بقوله "شعره جسّد حياة الصعاليك تجسيداً صادقاً، عبّر عن أخلاقهم، وصراعهم من أجل البقاء". ولهذا سيجد القارىء لهذا الكتاب أن الشنفري سار في قصائده على نهج الشعراء الصعاليك الذين عُنوا بوصف الغارات والفخر والإباء وقوة التحمل، أما أهم الأغراض التي تضمنها شعره، فهي الفخر والوصف، وصف الغارات والحيوان والصعاب التي تعترضه، ولا يكاد يخرج شعره في معظمه عن ذلك اللون الحماسي من الشعر، الذي ساد في تلك الفترة من الزمن. أما نسخة الديوان التي اعتمدها المحقق في هذا الكتاب فلا شك أنها تمثل ديوان الشنفري وقد صنّعه وشرحه مُؤرِّج بن عمر السدوسي (ت 195ه) وهو أحد الثلاثة الذين وردت أسماؤهم في سند الرواية ليس في الديوان فحسب بل في (الأغاني) وكذا في شرح المفضليات.
هذا، وقد توزع ديوان الشنفري على: دور الشعر العربي الموزون والمقفى وبحسب الترتيب الألفبائي في اللغة، مع شرح المفردات والألفاظ، وذكر لأسماء القبائل الواردة في الديوان مثل "أحاظة" و "الأزد" و "الإواس" وغيرها.
