لا يخلو رف في مكتبة أياً كان نوعها، من معجم، إن لم يكن مجموعة معاجم بل لا تخلو حقيبة الطالب أو الباحث من معجم. ومع ازدياد وسائل الاتصال في العالم وتنوعها وتعقدها، وسقوط حواجز المسافات البعيدة بين الدول تتأكد الحاجة إلى لمعرفة لغة أجنبية جنباً إلى جنب اللغة القومية لتكتمل بذلك دائرة الاتصال بين أفراد شعوب العالم. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف فإن المعجم الثنائي اللغة، سواء أكان عاماً أن متخصصاً، يلعب دوراً هاماً.
