المذهب العقلي عند ابن رشد موضوع جديد مبتكر لم يكتب فيه القدماء ولم يتعرضوا له لأن الحديث عن المذالهب كالمثالية والواقعية والعقلية والطبيعية وغير ذلك من هذه الألوان الجديدة التى درجت على أقلام الفلاسفة منذ الفلسفة الحديثة في القرن السابع عشر، كل ذلك لم يكن معهودا من قبل.
وهذه محاولة ولعلها أول محاولة لتطبيق فلسفة المذاهب على تاريخ الفلسفة الاسلامية.
ولكن ينضح المقصود من المذهب العقلي فلعله يجدر الموازنة بين هذا المذهب لفيلسوف قرطبة وبين مذاهب أخرى لفلاسفة إسلاميين آخرين مثل ابن سينا والفارابي وهما أبرز ممثلين للفلسفة الإسلامية وأكبر علمين لهذه الفلسفة ظهرا في المشرق الإسلامي.
