"حلم العمّ" هي الرواية الأولى التي كتبها دوستويفسكي بعد خروجه من معتقله بسبيريا، وتبدأ الرواية عند وصول الأمير "ك" إلى مورداسوف، ونزوله في بيت السيدة "ماريا الكسندر فنامو سكاليفا" التي تعتبر أهم سيدة في تلك البلدة، ولم يقضِ الأمير "العم" أو "ك" في مورداسوف إلا ثلاثة أيام فقط، ولكن هذه الإقامة القصيرة تركت ذكريات محتومة لا يمكن أن تمحى! أضف إلى ذلك أن زيارة الأمير أحدثت ثورة في المدينة وستكون قصة هذه الثورة بلا شك أهم صفحة في تاريخ مورداسوف.
وهكذا تمضي الرواية في وصف الأمير وعلاقته بأهل مورداسوف الذين بدا لهم أنه شخصية هزلية خفيفة الظل والروح، البعض تقبله، والبعض الآخر لم يتقبله، وقد بدأ بكتابة مسرحيات هزلية تعيد مجد "فيزين" و "جريبووف" و "جوجول" . "لقد كنت فيما مضى على قدر كبير من خفة الروح، بل إنني كتبت مسرحية من نوع الفو .. فو .. فودفيل بها مقطوعات غنائية رائعة. ومع ذلك، فإن هذه المسرحية لم تُمثَّل أبداً!". "تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى تدبر السيدة ماريا الكسندرفنا موسكاليفا أمر زواج إبنتها من الأمير "كانت ماريا ألكسندرفنا مندفعة بعبقريتها، فأعدت مشروعاً كبيراً جزئياً: ستُزوج إبنتها لرجل ثري، لأمير يحتضر .."، ولكن ما لبثت زينا أن اعترفت للأمير "لقد خدعناك أنا وأمي أيها الأمير، فخدعتك أمي بأن جعلتني أقبل أن أتزوجك، وخدعتك أنا بقبول هذا الزواج، لقد أسكرناك، وغنيت ومثلت أمامك لننهب مالك ... ولنسرق ثروتك ولقبك .. وهذا عمل كريه، فصفحاً! ..". في هذه الأجواء تدور أحداث الرواية، وقد صور من خلالها دوستويفسكي صورة عن الحياة الإجتماعية والروحية لروسيا في القرن الثامن عشر، والتي هي بالنهاية تعبر عن فلسفة الكاتب ورؤيته في الحياة، حتى أصبح واحداً من أفضل كتّاب روسيا في عصره.
