كانت الأميون من العرب الذين نسخ الله عز وجل بدينه الذي اختصهم به النحل ، وختم بملكهم الدنيا إلى انقضاء الأجل ، وهداهم لأفضل الملل، في جاهليتهم الجهلاء ، وضلالتهم العمياء لهم مذاهب في أسماء أبنائهم وعبيدهم وأتلادهم ، فاستشنع قوم إما جهلا وإما تجاهلا ، تسميتهم كلبا وكليا وأكلب وخنزيرا وقردا وما أشبه ذلك مما لم يستقص ذكره فطعنوا من حيث لا يجب الطعن وعابوا من حيث لا يستبط عيب. فشرحنا في كتابنا هذا أسماء القبائل والعمائر ، وأفخاذها وبطونها وتجاوزنا ذلك إلى أسماء ساداتها وثنيانها وشعرائها وفرسانها وجراري الجيوش من رؤسائهم ، ومن ارتضت بحكمة فيما شجر بينها وانقادت لأمره في تدبير حروبها ، ومكايدة أعدائها . ولم نتعد ذلك إلى اشتقاق أسماء صنوف النامي من نبات الأرض : نجمها وشجرها وأعشابها ولا إلى الجماد من صخرها ومدرها وحزنها وسهلها.
