هذا الكتاب تجربة فريدة تقدمها أربع مؤلفات مختلفات القومية والديانة، يحاولن فيها كشف جذور التعصب والنعرات الدينية التي يرينها أس جميع الشرور.
المؤلفات، لا يجمع بينهن إلا وعيهن المرهف بإنسانيتهن المشتركة، وترحابهن بالجهر بهذا الوعي دفاعاً عن قيم يعتززن باعتناقها، وشجباً للنهج والممارسات التي يدركن انها تنخر في هذه القيم وتدمرها. لقد أتت المؤلفات الأربع من خلفيات شديدة التباين، فبينهن مسلمة من مصر، ومسيحية متصوفة من أمريكا، ويهودية أمريكية، ويهودية من إسرائيل (لكنها تعيش حالياً في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية).
الكتاب يتميز بقدر هائل من المعلومات الخاصة بالأديان المختلفة التي تسوقها الكاتبات في محاولتهن النقدية لكشف أس الشرور الإنسانية، والذي يعرفنه في الكتاب بأنه "أي تصرف محسوب يقصد به الحط من قدر إنسان أو إلحاق الأذى به"، ويضفن أن اختلال موازين القوى بين الجنسين الناجم عن النسق الأبوي هو الذي تتسم به السلوكيات المتعصبة النابعة من الكبرياء بسبب علو المنزلة في سلم التراتب الهرمي، بعض الآراء التي وردت في الكتاب خلافية، وبالذات التي تخص الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي. وقد ناشقت المؤلفات خلافاتهن، ووصلن أحياناً إلى اتفاق، لكنهن اتفقن أحياناً أخرى على ألا يتفقن، ووصلن إلى خلاصة فحواها أن الكثير مما يعيب العالم المحيط بنا يرجع إلى الأصولية والتعصب، واختلال موازين القوى بين الجنسين.
