يدور هذا الكتاب حول الحرفيين في القاهرة خلال الفترة 1800 - 1600, ويحاول إدماجهم في تطورها التاريخي, ملقياً نظرة عن كثب علي بعض منهم, وخاصة من كانوا ينخرطون في صنع منتجات مهمة للسوق المحلية والتصدير, لبيان كيف تطوروا وكيف طوروا ممارسات رأسمالية, أفراداً وطوائف, وكيف تصدوا لافتئات العسكر والطبقات الحاكمة علي نشاطاتهم, وكيف قاوموا المنافسة الرأسمالية الأجنبية.
ويركز الكتاب علي بعض من الحرفيين ميسوري الحال الذين أستطاعوا - مع توسع التتجير - توسيع مجالات نشاطاتهم, وأقاموا أستثمارات لها شأنها, وتمكنوا من الحراك لأعلي حتي بات أعضاء من بيوتهم قوادا وأمراء, خاصة المعصرانية والنساجين.
كما يتناول الكتاب السياقات الإجتماعية والثقافية والأسرية التي عمل في ظلها هؤلاء الحرفيون, إضافة للسياقين السياسي والإقتصادي.
ويبين الكتاب أن أشكالاً عدة من الرأسمالية قد تعايشت وسبقت الأرتباط بالرأسمالية الغربية, وأن أشكالاً من أنماط ما قبل الرأسمالية, والرأسمالية من أسفل والإقتصاد التقليدي, وقد تعايشت وحددت التطور اللاحق لمسيرة الرأسمالية في مصر.
