ورأى مدلج التلال أشباحاً سوداء زاحفة وأحس الأرض تمور، والحقول تحترق والكائنات تفر في كل اتجاه والنساء حاسرات الرؤوس عبثاً يحاولن التخفي، وتوهم طفلاً ينادي أمه وهو يلفظ أنفاسه، وآخر يستغيث به: اسقني يا أبي، ثم أبصر فارساً يركب البرق مثخناً بالجراح لكنه يندفع بقوة مذهلة وقد صقله الإباء كأنه انفجار كوني يعلن بداية الحياة، فلاذت الأشباح السوداء بالفرار وتفجرت في التلال عيون ماء فخضرت، بعدها اقترب الفارس منه ثم رمق الأفق القريبة بنظرة فاحمة لم تستطع أن تحبس سبيلاً من الدموع، فأدرك مدلج أن نائبة ستحل ورأى صورته في زجاج النافدة تجاعيد هرم، فتخيل زمناً تتلاطم أمواجه وخشى أن يستسلم ذهنه إلى شيخوخة مشلولة.
