كان المسلمون، من أهل الحكم أو من أرباب العلم، يتحاشون فى أول الأمر ذكر الأصنام والأوثان لقرب عهد القوم بها ولبقيتها فيهم وفى صدور الكثير منهم، لكيلا يثيروا فى نفوس العامة ما ربما يكون عالقا بها من الحمية الأولى، حمية الجاهلية، فيعود الأمر إلى الضلال القديم.
حتى إذا ما رسخت قدم الإسلام،وتوطدت أركانه، وثبت بنيانه، لم يبق بعد مجال للخوف من الرجوع إلى الشرك بالله. فلما زالت العلة وانحسمت مادة ذلك الخوف، حينئذ توفر العلماء على تلقف الروايات من هنا ومن هنا، فجمعوا كل ما وصل إليهم من المعلومات الباقية عن تلك الديانات القديمة، كما تجردوا من جهة أخرى لألتقاط مابقى من أشعار الجاهلية وعاداتهم، وأحوال معيشتهم، وكل ما يتعلق بحياتهم الأدبية والأجتماعية.
فكان محمد بن إسحاق (صاحب المغازى والسير، المتوفى فى أواسط القرن الثانى للهجرة) أول من ألم بشئ من أمر عباداتهم القديمة. ولكن كتابه فى السيرة ضاع من الوجود، أو هو لا يزال مطويا فى ضمير الدهر إلى هذا العصر.
لكن ابن الكلبى (المتوفى بعد ابن إسحاق بنصف قرن تقريب) كان أول من أفرد لهذا الموضوع سفرا خاصا به، أسماه كتاب الأصنام.
وصل إلينا هذا الكتاب بالسند المتصل عن ابن الكلبى نفسه على يد سلسلة من جهابذة العلماء تبتدئ فى سنة 204 وتستمر إلى ماوراء سنة 495. وأسماء هؤلاء العلماء واردة فى السند الذى فى فاتحة الكتاب. وقد بحثت عنهم حتى اهتديت إلى ترجمة طائفة منهم فنقلتها فى آخر هذه الطبعة، لبيان مكانتهم بين أرباب العلم وأهل التحقيق. نقلت هذه التراجم عن كتاب لا يزال مجهولا وإن كان مؤلفه من أعلام الأعلام. وهذا الكتاب هو "إنباه الرواه، على أنباه النحاه" للوزير المشهور بالقاضى الأكرم، المعروف "بابن القفطى" نسبة إلى مدينة قفط من صعيد مصر.
