لا توجد كلمة مستعصية في اللغة الدينية - من الناحية اللاهوتية والشعبية معاً - معرضة لمزيد من سوء الفهم والتشويهات والتعريفات الملغزة أكثر من كلمة (الإيمان) وهذا المصطلح ينتمي إلى تلك المصطلحات التي تحتاج إلى مداواة قبل أن إمكان استخدامها لمداواة الناس، ومصطلح (الإيمان) اليوم يفضي إلى المرض على نحو أكبر مما يفضي إلى الصحة، إنه مصطلح يشوش ويضلل ويخلق النزعة الشكية ونزعة التعصب معاً، يخلق مقاومة عقلية واستسلاماً انفعالياً، يخلق رفضاً للدين الأصيل والخضوع للبدائل، وفي الحقيقة، إن المرء ينزع إلى الاقتراح بأن كلمة الإيمان يجب اسقاطها بالكامل، ولكن لما كانت هي كلمة مرغوب فيها فإنه يصعب أن يتم هذا الاسقاط، إن هناك تراثاً قوياً يحميها، وإنه لا يوجد مع هذا أي بديل يعبر عن الحقيقة التي يشير إليها مصطلح الإيمان، وهكذا، وفي الوقت الراهن فإنه لا توجد إلا طريقة واحدة لتناول المشكلة وهي محاولة إعادة تفسير الكلمة ومحو الدلالات المشوشة والمشوهه، وبعضها هو من تراث القرون، وإن أمل الكتاب هو أنه سوف ينجح على الأقل في هذا الغرض حتى ولو لم ينجح في هدفه الأكثر ابتعاداً عن مرمى الهدف، فإن يقنع بعض القراء بالقوة الخصبة في الإيمان داخل أنفسهم والدلالة اللامتناهية التي يرتبط بها الإيمان.
