تدور أحداث رواية "الإصدار صفر" للكاتب الأميركي دايفيد يوون داخل أروقة كبريات شركات تصميم البرامج الذكية في طوكيو، بطلها ماكس وهو شاب أميركي طموح من أصول سلفادورية كان هدفه أن يكون رئيساً تنفيذياً لتكنولوجيا خاصة به تماثل تكنولوجيا رين الشركة الرائدة في مجال التواصل الاجتماعي. يتقدم للعمل في رين ويتم قبوله في الوظيفة الجديدة ويُكلَّف بإدارة مشروع الروح، ويُطلب منه السرية في العمل، وتتمثل مهمته باختراق بيانات المستخدمين، لأغراض سيئة للغاية؛ وهكذا فمن خلال عمل الشاب ماكس في شركة رين للتواصل الاجتماعي، تمكن من إلقاء نظرة على عالم التكنولوجيا المظلم، وعندما تجرأ وسأل عما تفعله الشركة في البيانات التي تجمعها من زبائنها، طُرد من العمل، وسُدت كل الأبواب في وجهه، ورفضت كل الشركات توظيفه. تحت تأثير هذا الواقع الجديد، وبما أن أكثر ما يمتلكه العاطلون عن العمل هو الوقت والرغبة الجامحة في الانتقام، قرر وزميلته، والتي هي حبيبته السرية، إعادة الإنترنت واحة للسلام والأمان، ووضعا نصب أعينهما أن أفضل الطرق لإصلاح بعض الأشياء، يتمثل في تحطيمها وإعادة بنائها، وشاءت الصدف أن يلتقي دربهما مع درب ماريوت مالكوم أحد أقطاب التكنولوجيا والذي يسعى بدوره إلى الانتقام، وعندها تعلما بأبشع الطرق أن تحطيم الأشياء بهدف إعادة بنائها قد يكون له عواقب وخيمة وربما كارثية.
"الإصدار صفر" رواية جعلها ديفيد يوون سريعة الإيقاع، تفتح أعيننا على ضرورة إنقاذ أنفسنا من المخاطر الحقيقية للعالم الافتراضي.
