روائية وكاتبة من أصل أمريكي، وُلِدَت في "بريطانيا" عام 1849، بعد وفاة والدها في سنوات نشأتها الأولى، وبعد أن أرخت تبعات الحرب الأمريكية الأهلية بركودها الإقتصادي، تراجعت الصادرات في "إنجلترا" عموماً، وانهارت أعمال العائلة التجارية، فألمت بهم ظروف مالية عصيبة، عادت "فرنسيس" مع أمها وأشقائها إلى موطنهم الأصلي في "أمريكا" عام 1865، واستقروا مع شقيق أمها في ولاية "تينيسي" الريفية، في مقصورة خشبية على غرار العائلات الأصيلة.
وعلى الرغم من أنها لم تحظّ بتعليم أكاديمي، واقتصرتُ مرحلة التعليم على بضع سنوات قضتْها في مدرسة للإناث في "إنجلترا"، وعلى قراءتها الواسعة، فإن مسيرة "فرنسيس" تميزت بإنجازات مهنية حافلة ومثمرة في مجال الكتابة الإبداعية، صاغت خلالها خمسة وخمسين عنواناً، تربع خمسة منها على قائمة أفضل المبيعات الأدبية، وتحوّل ثلاثة عشر عنواناً آخر إلى أعمال مسرحية.
اضطرّت "فرنسيس" بعد إفلاس العائلة إلى خوض أولى محاولاتها لكسب المال، فتولّتْ إدارة مدرسة خاصة في بادئ الأمر، ولم تنجح في ذلك، ثم قررتْ - وكانت في الثامنة عشرة آنذاك - أن تبيع قصة لإحدى المجلات البريطانية المتخصصة بقضايا المرأة، سُئلَت حينها من إدارة المجلة فيما لو أنها استوحت قصة "قلوب وماسات" من عمل أدبي آخر، إذ لم يكن أمراً قابلاً للتصديق أن تكتب فتاة من "تينيسي" بأسلوب سردي يثير الإهتمام والإمتاع معاً، ولكي تُثبتَ لهم مصداقيتها، أرسلت إليهم قصة ثانية بعنوان "خطبة الآنسة كاروثر"، فجاءها الرد بالموافقة على نشر القصتين تباعاً.
