صادق جلال العظم المولود بدمشق هو مفكر وأستاذ فخري بجامعة دمشق في الفلسفة الأوروبية الحديثة كان أستاذاً زائراً في قسم دراسات الشرق الأدنى بجامعة برنستون حتى عام 2007.درس الفلسفة في الجامعة الأميركية، وتابع تعليمه في جامعة يال بالولايات المتحدة، عمل أستاذاً جامعياً في الولايات المتحدة قبل أن يعود إلى سوريا ليعمل أستاذاً في جامعة دمشق في 1977–1999 انتقل للتدريس في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت بين 1963 و1968عمل أستاذاً في جامعة الأردن ثم أصبح سنة 1969 رئيس تحرير مجلة الدراسات العربية التي تصدر في بيروت.
عاد إلى دمشق 1988 ليدرس في جامعة دمشق، وتمت دعوته من قبل عدة جامعات أجنبية ثم انتقل إلى الخارج مجدداً ليعمل أستاذاً في عدة جامعات بالولايات المتحدة وألمانيا، كتب في الفلسفة وعن دراسات ومؤلفات عن المجتمع والفكر العربي المعاصر، وهو عضو في مجلس الإدارة في المنظمة السورية لحقوق الإنسان.

فالغرب المعاصر يستمد اعتداده بنفسه من التراث المسيحي- اليهودي من ناحية ومن التراث الإغريقي- الروماني من ناحية أخرى والآن يعتبر الإسلام تاريخيا ودينيا وبكل المقاييس فرعا من التراث المسيحي اليهودي وتطويرا له بل إنه يدرك ذاته على هذا النحو) وهو أكثر قربا إلى هذين المكونين منه إلى التراث الإغريقي- الروماني الخالص بل إن إعادة التصنيف الدقيقة لتلك المكونات من شأنها أن تجعل التراث الإغريقي- الروماني الخالص بل إن اعادة التصنيف الدقيقة لتلك المكونات من شأنها أن تجعل التراث اليهودي- المسيحي- الإسلامي في جانب ( مع وجود صلات نسب قوية إيجابية وسلبية بين مكوناته)، والتراث الإغريقي- الروماني في جانب اخر وبالمثل لا تنعدم الروابط والاقتراحات والمؤثرات الإغريقية الرومانية إطلاقا في العالم الإسلامي الشرق أوسطي كما يوحى بذلك العداء الدائم بين العالمين. فالرؤية الجغرافية بها من الآثار والبقايا الرومانية أكثر مما في روما نفسها والإسلام نشأ في الشرق الأوسط المسيحي المتأثر بالثقافة البيزنطية تأثره بالثقافة الهللينية بينما اثرت الهللينية بدرجات متفاوته في كل من العقل المدرسي للمسيحية الشرقية، والعقل المدرسي للإسلام والعقل المدرسي للمسيحية الغربية (وكانت تلك أيضا فترة تدوين اليهود للتلمود). وقد شاركوا جميعا أفلاطون وأرسطو وأفلوطين من ناحية وآدهم وابراهيم وموسى من الناحية الأخرى.
