في 21 مارس 2003، أصدرت منظمة الصحة العالمية إنذاراً عالمياً حول تفشي شكل جديد من مرض شبيه بالتاب الرئة له أعراض شبيهة بتلك الموجودة في الأنفلونزا العادية. وهذا المرض، والذي عُرف تحت اسم التناذر التنفسي الحاد الوخيم (السارس)، هو وباء قاتل وشديد العدوى، مما يفسر انتشاره السريع في أنحاء العالم خلال أسابيع قليلة. فبمساعدة العولمة وسهولة السفر الجوي اليوم، انتقل المرض بين بلدان عدة منها الصين، وهونع كونغ، وفيتنام، وسنغافورة وكندا والولايات المتحدة وبعض أنحاء أوروبا، مع عدد كبير من الإصابات وعدد مرتفع من الوفيات.
في هذا الكتاب، تمّ تعقب التفشي العالمي لمرض السارس ووصفه، مع التركيز على المناطق التي تم التعرف فيها إلى أكبر عدد من الإصابات. وجرى تقديم لمحة شاملة عن القصة الكاملة: كيف انتشر المرض؛ كيف تفاعلت الحكومات، كيف تأقلمت المجتمعات والشعوب معه، وكيف يعمل خبراء الصحة بحماس كبير للتعرف إلى الفيروس والبحث عن علاج شافٍ له.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يحتوي الكتاب أيضاً على إرشادات يمكن أن يتبعها الشخص و/أو المنظمات للتخفيف من خطر التعرض للمرض المميت. كما ينطوي على إجراءات وقائية نشرتها منظمة الصحة العالمية، وخلاصات عشبية وقائية يوصي بها العديد من الأطباء الصينيين، علماً أنه جرى تقديم كل ذلك بطريقة سهلة القراءة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، تمّ إدراج أفكار لبعض الخبراء.
