تخبرنا رواية "أحدنا هو التالي" للكاتبة كارين م. ماكمنوس بأنّه منذ وفاة سايمون في رواية "أحدنا يكذب" ظهر عدد كبير من تطبيقات النميمة، ولكن بعد أن ثبتت براءة الطلاب الأربعة، خَفَتَ وهج هذه التطبيقات لأن أياً منها لم يمتلك حقائق قاسية ومؤلمة مثل التي كان سايمون يكشف عنها. محور رواية "أحدنا هو التالي" لعبة وليس تطبيقاً، فعلى اللاعبين الاختيار بين حقيقة أو جرأة.
أولى ضحايا هذه اللعبة كان الأختان إيما وفيبي، وما أن عمّ الشقاق بينهما، حتى ضربت اللعبة مجدداً، ففرقت بين بطلة الرواية السابقة "أحدنا يكذب"؛ ميف وصديقها نوكس، فأحدثت شرخاً كبيراً ومؤلماً بينهما. ولكن ما بدأ لعبة هنا سيتحول إلى شيء أكثر خطورة، عندما فجعت ثانوية بايفيو بخسارة طالب آخر، ولكن ميف تعرف من تجربة العام الماضي أنه لا يمكن الركون إلى تحقيقات الشرطة.
ذكاء وحنكة وشجاعة طلاب بايفيو على المحك، فهل ينفذ الجاني بفعلته أم يكونون له بالمرصاد مثل المرة السابقة؟
الأكيد أن المرح والإثارة، سيرافقان القراء في هذه الرواية كما كان الحال مع رواية "أحدنا يكذب"، فجعبة كارين ماكمنوس لا تنفذ أبداً من التشويق
