هذا الأطلس هو الأطلس التاريخي للعالم الإسلامي في العصور الوسطى؛ وضع لكي يسترشد به المشتغلون بالتاريخ الإسلامي، وطلاب المعرفة في دراساتهم الإسلامية، وهو يوضح انتشار الأسلام الجغرافي؛ فيشتمل على خرائط الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام، ثم على خرائط انسياح العرب إلى الشمال والشرق والغرب، وفي بعض الأحيان، أضيفت خرائط مكررة لزيادة التوضيح.
وقد تتبعت خرائط هذا الأطلس أسماء البلدان والمدن والجبال والصحاري والبحار والجزائر والبحيرات والنهار، كما تظهر في كتب المسلمين في العصور لاوسطى؛ وفي خرائط الجغرافيين المسلمين أنفسهم؛ وعلى الأخص خرائط العلوي الإدريسي الحمودي(ت560/1165)، الجغرافي المشهور، الذي رسم أكثر من اثنتين وثمانين خريطة، ويلاحظ أن بعض هذه الأسماء اندرست ولا وجود لها على الخارطة الحديثة، على حين ظل البعض الآخر قائماً بأسمائه العربية، حتى في البلاد التي كان الإسلام قد انتشر فيها في أوروبا... وإننا لنرجو أن يكون هذا الأطلس إسهاماً منا في إحياء التراث العلمي الذي أسهم به المؤلفون الجغرافيون العرب.
