في العالَمِ، حَوالَيْ 3000 نَوْعٍ مَعْروفٍ مِنَ السَّحِالي وَالثَّعابِينِ، لَدَى مْعْظَمِ السَّحالِي أَرْبَعُ أَرْجُلٍ، وَذَيْلٌ طَويلٌ، وَأُذُنانِ، وَجَفْنانِ مُتَحَرِّكانِ، عِنْدَ الثَّعابِينِ، يَتَفَاوَتُ طُولُ أَذْيالِها بِحَسَبِ نَوْعِها.
لَيْسَ لَها أَرْجُلٌ وَلَيْسَ جُفُونٌ، فَمَا يَحْمِي عَيْنَيِ الثُّعْبانِ هُوَ غِشاءٌ شَفَّافٌ لِلْعَيْنِ لا يَتَحَرَّكُ، تَعِيشُ السَّحالِي وَالثَّعابِينُ في الْمَناطِقِ الدَّافِئةِ أو الْحارَّةِ جِدّاً، وَهِيَ كَثِيرةٌ في الصَّحارِي.
لكنَّ بَعْضَ أَنْواعِ الثَّعابِينِ تَعِيشُ في مَناطِقَ قارِصَةِ الْبَرْدِ مِثْلِ شِمالِ الدَّائِرةِ الْقُطْبيَّةِ.
