هذا الكتاب لا يمثل يوى جزء من العمل الذى قمت به أثناء غقامتى بمصر التى دامت ست سنوات. كنت أقضى سنوياً ستة أشهر فى المتوسط وانا أعيش معيشة كاملة بين الفلاحين وأحب ان أوضح لقرائى أن العادات والمعتقدات، والأسلوب العام للحياة، كما جاءت فى هذا الكتاب ، لا تمثل إلا الفلاحين وحدهم. فقد تخلصت البطقات العليا من كل ذلك منذ زمن طويل. وهذه العادات والمعتقدات لها قيمتها الكبيرة فى حد ذاتها ولكن كون معظمها شديد القدم يجعل دراستها وتسجيلها بصورة صحيحة امر لابد منه لقد ألقت أبحاثى الضوء على نقاط ظلت قبل ذلك غامضة بالنسبة لدراسى مصر القديمة. لذا فأنا كلى أمل فى ألا يكون هذا الكتاب إسهاما فى علم الأنثروبولوجيا فحسب بل كذلك مساهمة منى فى علم المصريات.
