موضوع هذه المسرحية الأساسي هو الزواج كعلاقة اجتماعية تربط بين شخصين، وتقوم على الرغبة في الإنجاب وتأسيس الأسرة التي درّج المجتمع، وربما علم الاجتماع، على وضع شرط وجود الأبناء لقيامها واستمرارها، لكن حين ينعدم الأبناء وتموت القدرة على الإنجاب تنقلب علاقة الزواج بالتالي إلى مشكلة، وفي بعض الأحيان قد يصطنع الزوجان وهماً فيظنان أن الابن موجود ويجعلان من وجوده الوهمي (عكازاً) يسندان به علاقتهما حتى لا تنهار، ولكن مجرد الوهم لا يكفي بالطبع، فالحقيقة تترسخ، ويظل الوهم طاغياً على سطحها، قابلاً للانقشاع في أية لحظة، نحن هنا إزاء زوجين، هما "جورج ومارشا"، وكذلك إزاء الغير، أو الجحيم ممثلاً في زوجين آخرين هما "نك وهنى"، والزوجان الأولان يكونان مجموعة أخرى تقابل الأولى وتتعارض معها في الوقت نفسه، ومشكلة المجموعتين واحدة هي الزواج، وذروتها هي عدم الإنجاب لكنها تختلف من مجموعة لأخرى، فتتضخم لدى الأولى وتفزع الثانية... أما مصطلح "فرجينيا وولف" هنا (كاسم للمسرحة) ما هو إلا رمز لما يخفيه الأفراد وراء ظهورهم، وما يدور في أذهانهم، ولا يستطيعون البوح به حين يتكلمون به أو حتى حين يصمتون، خوفاً من الحقيقة ومن أنفسهم، وقد وفق أو لبي في اختيارها رمزاً في مسرحيته، فأبطالها مثقفون يعرفون "فرجيينا وولف" كما يعرفون التاريخ الزماني والتاريخ الطبيعي على السواء.
يتميز أولبي بموهبة كبيرة في خلق الحوار الحي النابض الذي ينطلق بسرعة كطلقات المدفع الرشاش، فيصيب ويقتل دون أن يخطئ الهدف. وأولبي في جميع مسرحياته يضع نسب عينيه موضوعاً بذاته، هو موضوع العلاقات الاجتماعية، ابتداء من علاقة الإنسان بالغير، إلى علاقة الزوج بزوجته، كما في هذه المسرحية، وأسلوبه قائم على تعرية هذه العلاقات بحثاً عن الحقيقة.
