عمل ستيف كول في الصحافة منذ عام 1980، وهو رئيس مؤسسة أمريكا الجديدة وكاتب مشارك بمجلة "نيويوركر"، وأمضى 20 عاماً مراسلاً خارجياً ومحرراً بصحيفة "واشنطن بوست" الأمريكية، ومديراً لتحريرها خلال الفترة من 1998 إلى 2004.
وقام بتأليف عدة كتب، منها "صفقة العصر" و"الحصول على النفط" و"النسر في الشارع" و"على طريق جذوع الأشجار الكبير" و"رحلة في جنوب آسيا" و"حروب الأشباح" و"أسرار وكالة الاستخبارات الأمريكية" و"أفغانستان وبن لادن منذ الغزو السوفيتي إلى 10 سبتمبر 2001" و"أسرة عربية في الزمن الأمريكي".
وحصل على مجموعة من الجوائز المهنية، منها "بوليتزر"، وكانت الأولى في مجال الصحافة التوضيحية عام 1990، والثانية حصل عليها عام 2005 عن كتابه "حروب الأشباح"، كما حصل أيضاً على جائزة "أرثر روث" التي يمنحها مجلس العلاقات الخارجية عن نفس الكتاب.
وحصل أيضاً على جائزة "نادي الصحافة الدولي" وجائزة "ليونيل جيلبر" لأفضل كتاب في مجال العلاقات الدولية خلال عام 2004، ونال جائزة "ليفينجستون" للتمييز في التقارير الصحفية الخارجية، وجائزة "روبرت إف كينيدي" عن تغطيته للحرب في سيراليون، وجائزة أخرى من نادي الصحافة الدولي في مجال الكتابة الصحفية بالمجلات.

في هذا الكتاب أدلة دامغة على تورُّط السي.آي.إيه "بخلق" طالبان والقاعدة وتضخيمهما. تعدَدت الملاعب على امتداد العالم واللاعب واحد هو وكالة الاستخبارات الأمريكية.
أفغانستان مجدداً الهدفُ والمرمى. والسي آي.إيه, ممثلة بغاري شروين الذي يستخدم المأجورين ويديرهم ليقود عمليات التجسُّس والأعمال السرية ضد الحكومات الأجنبية والمجموعات الإرهابية, ظلّت على مدى ستّ عشرة سنة تلاحق أهدافها بدفع صناديق ضخمة من الأموال.
