آن الأوان لإيلاء الزمن عند الجاهليين اهتمامنا وجهدنا بعد أن درس الزمن عند اليونان والبابليين والمصريين القدماء والمسلمين وقد آن الأوان أيضاً لدراسة تأثر الشعراء الجاهليين بفكرة الزمن وانعكاس ذلك التأثر على مواقفهم وأشعارهم، وفي كتابنا هذا (الزمن عند الشعراء العرب قبل الإسلام) حاولنا تحقيق هذا الهدف بصدق وصبر ورغبة، أما الكتاب فقد جعلناه في خمسة فصول تصدي الفصلان الأول والثاني لدراسة الزمن دراسة موضوعية بينما تصدي الفصول: الثالث والرابع والخامس لدراسة الزمن دراسة فنية، ولم يسع الكتاب في كل فصوله لتأريخ الزمان والنظرات المتعلقة به أو استخلاص قوانينه، وإنما انصرف سعيه إلى تقديم صورة شاملة للزمن تتراءى من خلالها مديات تصور الشعراء الجاهليين وأثر ذلك التصور في مواقفهم من خلال تقصي النصوص الشعرية التي قيلت في الزمن ودراسة الظروف الموضوعية والذاتية التي هيمنت على الانفعالات المختبئة وراء العمل الشعري المكرس للزمن، ولقد كانت فصوله كالتالي: (الفصل الأول: منطلقات في دراسة الزمن، الفصل الثاني: الزمن من خلال الوقت، الفصل الثالث: الزمن من خلال رموز الحياة والموت، الفصل الرابع: تحولات الزمن إلى معاني السلطان والناس والمرأة، الفصل الخامس: مواقف الشعراء العرب قبل الإسلام من الزمن).
