يقصّ ميشيل إنده في هذا الكتاب المغامرة الرائعة الثانية التي يعيشها "جم الرز" وصداقته لوقا مع القاطرة القديمة (ايما). وسير هذه الرحلة مشوق جداً كبقية الرحلات السابقة التي قام بها الصديقان اللذان لا يمنعهما عن وصول هدفهما أي شيء بالمرة... لا طريق طويل ولا مياه عميقة ولا جبل عال. ففي مغامرتهما هذه يصادقان ملك البحر وابنته الجذابة سورسولا بيتشي، وتجترعان "مستمر الحركة" الذي تتعلم القاطرة ايما الطيران بمساعدته وتنتصران على عصابة قراصنة البحر المفزعين "13" المتوحشة. هذا السرد المشوق والمسلي لأهم الأحداث والتحولات الفجائية في هذه القصة الفنية، وكذلك وصف شخصياتها بطريقة محسوسة ودقيقة جعل هذا الكتاب من كتب الأطفال الكلاسيكية المنتشرة والمحبوبة جداً، ليس فقط بين الأطفال، وإنما بين الجميع كباراً وصغاراً.
ظهرت مشكلة في الجزيرة الغاية في الصغر لومرلاند، إذ إنّ قارب البريد، ارتطم ليلاً بشاطئ الجزيرة، ووجد الجميع أنّ وجود منارة ضروري جداً لتفادي مثل هذه الحوادث في المستقبل؛ إلاّ أنّ لومرلاند صغيرة جدّاً ولا تتّسع لبناء منارة حقيقيّة. هنا خطرت لـ"جم" فكرة رائعة: المارد الوهميّ هو من يستطيع أن ينفّذ هذه المهمّة بطريقة نموذجيّة.
