أَخْبَرَنِي الشَّيخُ (محمَّد وَدَّ البَصِير) أنَّهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ بَعْدَ فُتُوحِ الخُرْطُومِ طَلَبَهُ المَهْدِيُّ نِصْفَ النَّهَارِ وَقَالَ لَهُ: "إِنَّ أَمْرَ المَهْدِيَّةِ كَانَ طَوِيلَاً وَلَكِنَّ الإِخْوَانَ غَيَّرُوا وَبَدَّلُوا". قَالَ فَقُلْتُ له: "باللهِ عليكَ كَيْفَ اتَّبَعَكَ هَؤلاءِ وَهُمْ تَعَوَّدُوا أَلَّا يَتَّبِعُوا أحداً؟" فَتَبَسَّمَ وَقَالَ لِي: "يا أَخِي إِنَّهمْ إِلى الآنَ لَمْ يَتَّبِعُونِي عَلَى مَا أَطْلُبُهُ مِنْ إِقَامَةِ الدِّين". قُلتُ لَهُ: "لا تَحْزَنْ يَا مَهْدِيَّ الله فَيَدٌ تَبْنِي وَيَدٌ تَهْدِمُ. أَنْتَ بَنَيْتَ وَهُمْ هَدَمُوا. قُلْتَ لَهُمْ لا تَقْتُلُوا غُرْدُونَ فَقَتَلُوه، وَقُلْتَ لَهُمْ لا تَمَسُّوا الشُّيُوخَ فِي الخُرْطُومِ فَنَحَرُوا أَعْنَاقَهُمْ، وَقُلْتَ لَهُمْ لَا تَقْرَبُوا النِّسَاءَ فَجَمَعُوهُنَّ فِي الزَّرِيبَةِ وَقَسَّمُوهُنَّ بَيْنَهُمْ كَمَا يُقَسِّمُ الجَزَّارُ قِطَعَ اللَّحْمِ. لا تَحْزَنْ يَا مَهْدِيَّ اللهِ. أَنْتَ قَدَّمْتَ عُذْرَك بينَ يَدَيْ الله، وَهَؤُلاءِ قَوْمٌ خَلَطُوا نُورَ الحَقِّ بِمَحْضِ الزَّيْف، وَنَحَرُوا مِسْبَحَةَ الصُّوفِيِّ بِحَدِّ السَّيْف، وَقَتَلُوا مَهْدِيَّتَنَا فِي المَهْدِ وَقَبْلَ مَجِيءِ الصَّيْف، وَقَالُوا قَدْ زَهَقَ التُّرْكُ وَجَاءَ الحَقُّ وَلَكِنْ كَيْف!".
