قُلتُ لها إنَّنِي أُحِبُّها كَأَشَدِّ ما يَكُونُ حُبُّ الرِّجَالِ للنِّسَاءِ، وَفَوْقَ ذَلك فإِنَّ الذي بيني وَبَيْنَهَا هُوَ لِقَاءُ أَرْوَاحٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَقَاءَ قُلُوبٍ، وَأَنِّي بَحَثْتُ عَنْهَا لأتَزَوَّجَهَا قَبْلَ أَرَاها، وَذَلِكَ بَعْدَ أنْ سَمِعْتُ حِكَايَتَها مِنْ جَدِّهَا. وقدْ عِشْتُ مَعَهَا أَيَّاماً لا تُنْسَى. وَقُلتُ لَها إنْ لم نَلْتَقِ في هذه الحياة، فَمُؤكَّدٌ أَنَّنَا سنلتقي في حَياةٍ أُخْرَى دَائِمَةٍ، لا تَنْقَضِي وَلا تَنْقَطِعُ، وَلا شَيْءَ يُفَرِّقُنَا!
كَتَبتُ الوصِيَّةَ مُتَجَالِدَاً، ثُمَّ إِنِّي بَعْدَما فَرَغْتُ عُدتُ إِلى ضَعْفِي وَأَشْجَانِي وَشَوْقِي، فَبَكَيْتُ عَلَيهَا كَما تَبكي النِّسَاءُ. بكيتُ لأَنِّي أَعْلَمُ أَنَّهَا امرَأَةٌ لَا تَسْتَحِقُّ مِنِّي هَذا، وَأَنِّي بِعَدَمِ مُشَاوَرَتِهَا فِي مَصِيرِي قَدْ ظَلَمْتُهَا، فَقَد ارتَبَطَتْ مَصَائِرُنَا بِرِبَاطٍ وَثيقٍ. لَكِنِّي عُدتُ لِواقِعِي، وقلتُ لنَفْسِي إِنَّ هذهِ سُنَّةُ الحياةِ، وإِنِّي أُقَدِّمُ نَفْسِي فِدَاءً لِمَا آمنتُ بِه. كان أكثر الأشياءِ صُعُوبةً هو التفكيرُ في مُفَارَقَةِ «صُلَيْحَة». وبالرَّغْمِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ عَزَمْتُ على مُفَارَقَتِهَا. وكنتُ أعلمُ أَنَّ هذا العَمَلَ الذي أَنَا مُقْدِمٌ عَلَيهِ سَوفَ يُعَرِّضُنِي لِلموتِ بِلَا أَدْنَى شَكٍّ. لَكِنِّي مَعَ ذَلِكَ مَضَيْتُ فِيهِ دُونَ تَرَدُّدٍ.
