وُلدت لورا إنغالز وايلدر في العام 1867 في كوخ خشبي تم وصفه في كتاب "منزل صغير في الغابة الكبيرة"، وكما تحدثنا مؤلفاتها الكلاسيكية "سلسلة كتب المنزل الصغير"، كانت تسافر هي وأسرتها في عربة مغطاة عبر الغرب الأوسط.
وقد قامت هي وزوجها، ألمانزو وايلدر، بالسفر في رحلتهما الخاصة في عربة مغطاة مع ابنتهما، روز، إلى مانسفيلد، في ولاية ميزوري، وهناك كتبت لورا قصتها في "كتب المنزل الصغير"، وعاشت إلى أن بلغت التسعين من عمرها، إلا أنه بالنسبة لملايين القراء، فهي تعيش للابد بوصفها الفتاة الصغيرة الرائدة في كتب المنزل الصغير المحبوبة.
بدأ غارث ويليامز عمله على الصور من أجل سلسلة كتب المنزل الصغير من خلال لقاء لورا إنغالز وايلدر في منزلها في ميزوري، ومن ثم من خلال السفر إلى مواقع جميع المنازل الصغيرة المختلفة.
وأدت رسوماته الكلاسيكية إلى جعل لورا تعلّق بأنها "وعائلتها يعيشون مرة أخرى في تلك الصور"، كما قام غارث ويليامز أيضاً بإبداع رسومات شبكة تشارلوت، وستيورات ليتل، وتقريباً مائة كتاب آخر.
