تُعد اللغة العربية إحدى اللغات الحية في العالم، وتحفل بألفاظ غير عربية ومنها الفارسية، ويدل هذا على أن اللغة العربية تسير في إتجاه التأثر والتأثير في لغات الأقوام الأخرى، فمثلما تتقبل مفردات من لغات أخرى في مجالات مختلفة، فإنها تعير وتعطي كلمات بذلك القدر وربما أكثر.
مفهوم المعرّب عند العرب يعني جميع الألفاظ الغريبة من حيث الجذر، لكنهم استخدموها في لغتهم، أدناه مفهوم المعرّب عند العرب: الإنتقال: وهو ما ينقله أحد أئمة اللغة العربية من لفظ، الإنحراف: إنحرافها عن أوزان الأسماء العربية مثل، إلابريسم الذي لا يوجد له وزن في الأسماء العربية.
الإسم الذي أوله نون وراء مثل النرجس... الإسم الذي آخره الزاء بعد الدال مثل مهندز... الإسم الذي تأتي فيه الصاد والجيم معاً مثل: الصولجان والجصّ... الإسم الذي تأتي فيه الجيم والقاف معاً مثل، المنجنيق...
الأسماء الرباعية والخماسية التي تخلو من حروف الذلاقة وهي (الباء، الفاء، الميم والنون)، فإذا تكون مثل هذه الأسماء عربية فلا بد أن يكون فيها أحد تلك الحروف.
لقد شهدت الألفاظ المعرّبة إضافة إلى ذلك تغييرات صوتية وصرفية ودلالية، لكن العرب أبقوا بعض الألفاظ على حالتها الأصلية القديمة، لذلك فإن البحث والتحقيق بشأن الألفاظ المعرّبة يعتبر أحد أصعب الدراسات اللغوية.
