والخدمة الاجتماعية بشتى صورها تسعى للتعرف على التفاعلات العديدة المتداخلة بين البشر، وبيئاتهم، لذا فمهمتها هي تقوية قدرات هؤلاء البشر على تطوير حياتهم وتحسين أوضاعهم المعيشية، والحد أو الوقائية من الاختلافات الوظيفية. ومن ثم فمهنة الخدمة الاجتماعية تصب جل اهتماماتها على حل المشكلات، والتغيير. ولذلك ينظر للأخصائيين الاجتماعيين بوصفهم وكلاء للتغيير في المجتمع، وفي حياة الأفرد، والأسر.
ومن ثم أيضًا فالخدمة الاجتماعية هي بمثابة نسق متداخل من القيم، والنظريات والممارسة، وفي هذا الكتاب نتناول ذلك بالبحث في ثمانية فصول هي: الخدمة الاجتماعية، الخدمة الاجتماعية وحقوق الإنسان، الأخصائي الاجتماعي وحقوق الإنسان، حقوق الإنسان من منظور الخدمة الاجتماعية، حقوق الإنسان والتنمية، الحق الإنساني في المياه، المتطلبات الأساسية من المياه اللازمة لممارسة الأنشطة الإنسانية والوفاء بالحاجات الإنسانية والفصل الثامن في العلاقة بين وعي الأخصائي الاجتماعي بالحقوق الاجتماعية للإنسان ومستوى أدائه المهني، وأخيرًا إعلانات ومواثيق حقوق الإنسان.
