لقد كان لفلسطين حضاري تاريخٌ مشرقٌ، وظهرت فيها خزائن كتب خاصة وعامة أنشأها سلاطين وأمراء تلك البقاع، وأوقفوا عليها ما نفُس من الكتب والمؤلفات، وقد كانت غزة مما اشتهر بين تلك المدن بمكتباتها العامة، وخزائن علمائها الخاصة، ومن أهمها وأعظمها مكتبة أسسها الملك الظاهر بيبرس في القرن السابع الهجري؛ هي مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير الذي يعدّ من أعرق المساجد الأثرية في تلك المدينة. يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوءَ على تاريخ هذه المكتبة، ويبيّن نشأتها، وأشهر العلماء والأعيان الذين ساهموا بتأسيسها على مرّ السنين، ويذكر أشهر أصحاب المكتبات والأعلام الذين أوقفوا الكتب عليها داخل فلسطين وخارجها، مع مُدخَلٍ عن أهم المكتبات الموجودة في سائر المدن الفلسطينية وعلى رأسها مدينة القدس الشريف، ونبذة تعريفية حول الجامع العمري الكبير، وجهود إمامه وخطيبه الشيخ عثمان الطباع في إعادة تأسيسها وإعمارها.
