نشأت المستشفيات في أوروبا خلال القرون الوسطى ضمن تصور إحساني ثم لم يلبث أن تطورت فيما بعد لتتحول إلى مؤسسات علاجية يؤمها مختلف أصناف المرضى، اشتقت كلمة مستشفى من اللفظة اللاتينية (اوسبيتيوم) التي تعني دار إستقبال الضيوف.
بيد أن المستشفيات في أيامنا هذه لم تعد هي ملاجئ أو فنادق التي كانت من قبل بل مراكز علاجية متطورة تتوفر على البنية المطلوبة لعلاج المرضى.
ويوجد بمصالحها المختصة طاقم طبي ذو كفاءة عالية يستخدم أحدث التقنيات وينكب على إنقاد آلاف المرضى، ولكن الصورة لم تكن على هذه الشاكلة من قبل.
في القرن السادس تم بناء اول مستشفيات لإيواء المتشردين والمرضى، وقد نشئ سنة 830م أحد أقدم وأشهر مستشفيات العالم وهو فندق الله بباريس وكانت تشرف عليه بعض الراهبات اللواتي كن بذلك أولى الممرضات وطيلة العمر الوسيط، وكانت المستشفيات آنذاك مرتبطة بشكل واسع بالأفكار الدينية والإجتماعية وهكذا كانت الكنيسة هي التي تنشئ وتدير المستشفيات وكانت تخص بعلاجها في بداية الأمر رجال الدين ثم صارت تتكفل تدريجياً بالمسافرين المرضى إلى أن صارت تعالج لاحقاً حتى غير المتدينين.
