في الكتاب، يكتسب الحوار السينمائي الطويل بين فرنسوا تروفو (1932- 1984) والفريد هيتشكوك (1899- 1980) أهمية خاصة في أدبيات السينما العالمية لأسباب متعددة منها: أن هذا الحوار جرى بين مخرجين سينمائيين، لكل منهما تجربته الخاصة، فلكل منهما ثقافة مختلفة، في الجذور والفروع، وكان هذا الحوار الذي امتد إلى خمسمائة سؤال وجواب هو الأكثر صولاً في الحوارات التي جرت مع رواد السينما العالمية، وهو بمثابة عملية تشريح دقيقة لتجربة فنية خاصة جداً في تاريخ السينما، تمتد من نهايات السينما الصامتة في منتصف العشرينات إلى منتصف السبعينات، وتشمل ثلاثة وخمسين فيلماً في نصف قرن من التحولات الكبرى في الحياة والفن معاً.
مات الرجل، ولكن السينمائي لم يمت، لأن أفلامه، اخترقت العالم بأسره منافسة الانتاجات الجديدة، متحدية عوامل الزمن، محققة صورة جان كوكتو حينما تحدث قائلاً: "لقدمات، ولكن أعماله بقيت حية، على غرار الساعات في معاصم الجنود الميتين".
