التفكير الناقد نشاط مقلق بطبيعته، فهو محاولة لامتحان افتراضات نقرها أو نصادر عليها ونسلك بمقتضاها، والناس لا يرغبون عادة في أن تمتحن افتراضاتهم وتبتلي تصرفاتهم أكثر مما يجب، ولا يروقهم أن تصبح جذورهم بادية في العراء، ثمة مبدأ يضمره كل تفكير ناقد، مؤداه أن الحقيقة ليست في حوزة أحد، وأن قيمة الفكرة إنما تكمن في وجاهة ما تؤسس عليه من أسباب، وأن الخوار مع الآخرين أفضل سبيل لفهمهم والإفادة من تجاربهم من ثم يعد الاهتمام بمهارات التفكير الناقد مشروعاً تنويرياً يكرس قيم العقلانية والموضوعية والتعددية والتسانح الفكري، إن التغاضي عن رأي الآخر، أو التعددية أو التقليل من شأنه لمجرد أنه لا يتسق مع ما نقر من معتقدات جريمة في حق أنفسنا قبل أن يكون جريمة في حق الآخرين.
