كلُّ شيءٍ عن رواية "الشُّرطيِّ الثَّالث" يكتنفه الغموض، بدءًا بتأخُّر نشرها، وليس انتهاءً بما جعلها تحفةً تستحقُّ المقارنة بالواقعيَّة العجائبيَّة لكافكا الذي كان أوبراين، وفقًا لكاتب سيرته الذَّاتيَّة، معجبًا بأعماله وإن لم يعترف بذلك. تبدأ القصَّة بجريمتَي قتلٍ وسرقةٍ يرتكبهما الرَّاوي المجهولِ الاسمِ الذي ينوي استخدام غنائم الجريمة لنشر كتابٍ يتضمَّن تعليقاته على كتابات فيلسوفٍ معتوهٍ – يُدعى دو سيلبي – افترضَ أنَّ الأرض في الواقع ليست كرويَّةً، بل بشكل السُّجُقِّ، وأنَّ اللَّيل شكلٌ من أشكال التَّلوُّث الجويِّ، وأنَّ الزَّمنَ والحياةَ مجرَّدُ هلاوس. من تلك اللَّحظة فصاعدًا، يصبح الكتاب أكثر غرابةً، إذ يجد الرَّاوي نفسه في بُعدٍ بديلٍ لا يختلف عن المنطقة المحيطة بمنزله الأيرلنديِّ الرِّيفيِّ، ولكنَّه يعمل وفقًا لمجموعةٍ مختلفةٍ تمامًا من القوانين الميتافيزيقيَّة، فرجال الشُّرطة مقتنعون بأنَّ سكَّان المنطقة يتحوَّلون إلى درَّاجاتٍ، والأبديَّة على بعد رحلةٍ بالمصعد، على يسار النَّهر. أمَّا النُّقطة الأكثر إثارةً للدَّهشة فيدَّخرها الكاتب للخاتمة، حين يكتشف الرَّاوي بعض الحقائق المربكة حول وضعه الميتافيزيقيِّ. "الشُّرطيُّ الثَّالث" روايةٌ كوميديَّةٌ سوداء رائعةٌ حول طبيعة الزَّمن والموت والوجود، روايةٌ تنضمُّ إلى روايات فلانْ أوبراين الأخرى (سباحةُ طائرَين؛ الفمُ المسكين؛ الحياة القاسية؛ صفوةُ كتابات مايلز، أرشيفُ دالكي)، لتضمن مكانه، جنبًا إلى جنبٍ مع جيمس جويس وصمويل بيكيت، كواحدٍ من عباقرة أدب أيرلندا العظيم.
