يضم هذا الكتاب 78 آية من القرآن يأتي على ذكر موضوع "النصارى" بما في ذلك الآيات التي ورد فيها ذكر "أهل الكتاب" وتشير إليهم، علماً أنه قد تم استثناء الآيات التي ورد فيها: "المسيح عيسى ابن مريم" و"مريم ابنة عمران" والحواريون والآيتان 30 (حول النصارى و31 (حول الأحبار) من سورة التوبة، لأنها وردت في كتاب "عيسى ومريم في القرآن والتفاسير" الذي أصدره المعهد الملكي للدراسات الدينية سنة 1996، وذلك تجنباً لعدم التكرار نظراً لوحدة الموضوع والترابط الوثيق بين الكتابين. وكما في كتاب "عيسى ومرين في القرآن والتفاسير" اتبع المؤلف المنهاج التالي "الآية أولاً ثم تلاها بالتفاسير في عدد مختار من كتب التفسير" كما أنه اقتصر على إيراد الأصول من هذه التفاسير، واستبعد الفقرات المنقولة حرفياً بحذافيرها، كما اقتصر في الأحاديث "المعنعنة" على ذكر السند الأول والسند الأخير فقط".
لا غرو أن يهتم المسلمون بكتاب دينهم، ويعنوا عناية فائقة في تفسير آيته البينات، لأنه المرجع الأول والأساسي في شرح دقائق تشريعاتهم الزمنية وكل ما يتعلق بأمور دنياهم وآخرتهم. لذلك نرى أنهم حددوا شروطاً مفصلة لما يجب على المفسر أن يتحلى به من معرفة واسعة في جميع حقول حقول العلوم ليتمكن من تأدية مهمة التفسير على أتم ما يرام. إن العلماء، كما ذكر الزمخشري، بينوا أن على المفسر شروطاً لا يحل لمن عري عنها التعاطي بالتفسير، وهي: "أن يعرف خمسة عشر علماً على وجه الإتقان والكمال: اللغة، والنحو والتصريف، والاشتقاق، والمعاني، والبيان، والبديع، والقراءات، وأصول الدين، وأصول الفقه، وأسباب النزول، والقصص، والناسخ والمنسوخ، والفقه، والأحاديث المبينة لتفسير المجمل والمبهم، وعلى الموهبة وهو علم يورثه الله سبحانه وتعالى لمن عمل بما علم. وهذه العلوم التي لا مندوحة للمفسر عنها، وإلا فعلم التفسير لا بد له من التبحر في كل العلوم.
