كتابُ (عُيونِ الأخبارِ) واحدٌ مِن كُتُبِ الأدبِ العامَّة في المكتبَةِ العربيّةِ، بل مِن الحَقِّ أَنْ يُعدَّ مِن كُتُبِ الثّقافَةِ الإنسانيَّة، لِما احتواهُ مِن آثارِ العَرَبِ واليونانِ والهِنْدِ والرّومِ والفُرْس ومِن علومِهم جميعاً؛ وكانَ اللّسانُ العربيُّ المُبِينُ الوِعاءَ الأنيقَ الّذي حَمَلَ هذه الثّقافَةَ الإنسانيَّةَ حينَ امتَزَجَتْ في ظِلالِ دَوْحَةِ الحضارةِ العربيّةِ الإسلاميّة؛ ومؤَلِّفُهُ واحدٌ مِن أعلامِ العلماءِ الثّقاتِ في علومٍ عدَّة.
وهو من أهمّ مصادِرِ كُتُبِ الأدبِ الّتي جاءَت بعدَه فاسْتَقَتْ منه ونَسَجَتْ على مِنْوالِه، وقد جَمَعَ الحكمةَ والأخبارَ والأشعارَ والأمثالَ وَبَدِيعَ الأقوال في نواحي الحياة، ولذلكَ استحقَّ أن يَصِفَهُ ابنُ دُرَيْدِ بأنَّهُ واحدٌ منْ مُتَنَزَّهاتِ القُلُوب.
