شخصٌ آخر تتحول فور أن تكون داخل هذه الأبهة الكولونيالية، وتوخّياً للدِّقة حتى قبل أن تدلف من البوابة الشاهقة والمقوّسة، تشعر بك تتخلص تدريجياً من الشخص الذي تكونه، في منزل جدتك، حيث تلفّ وسطك بفوطة مخططة وتأكل الحلوى الشعبية وتحتسي القهوة المزغول، أو في الأزقة الضيقة لحارات كريتر القديمة، ودكاكينها البسيطة المعتمة قليلاً.
الشخص الذي تكونه هنا هو الشخص نفسه الذي تحسّ به يخفق بين ضلوعك، في منزل آيريس، الإنكليزية التي تعادي قومها وترى فيها شخصاً غريب الأطوار، وتلتقيه أيضاً ينسب متفاوتة، في الحي الأوروبي الذي يعجّ بالمقاهي الحديثة وصالات السينما، وفي الماين روود بأضوائه وسياراته الفاخرة، ربما لم تلتق عينيك بعيني الفرنسي، طوال ما مضى من وقت، إلا أنّ ذلك لم يؤثّر، كان محفِّزاً غامضاً على الأرجح، في شعورك أن كيانك كله يتحقق، ما إن تكون في منزله.
تنسج هذه الرواية، التي تنهض على مستويين، مواقف مركّبة ومركبة: مستعمَر يجد نفسه مشدود إلى المستعمر، ومستعمِر يتمرد على تقاليد رسّختها إمبراطوريته خلال عقود من الزمن، نصٌ يجمع بين أنا وآخر، في متحوّل يمسّ سياقه ذات بهوية حيناً، وبلا هوية أحياناً كثيرة، ومدينة لم يعرف أحد من سكانها متعدد الأعراق والثقافات والديانات، لمن هي على وجه التحديد، كما تتداخل في مستواه الأول الضمائر وتتشابك، لتفصح عن برهة شديدة الكثافة والتعقيد، أي الساعات الأخيرة للإستعمار الإنجليزي.
