حين قرأت الكتاب أخذت به, وقر رأيى على ترجمته, فهو نموذج يحتذى فى الجهد والصبر والمنهج والجدية, وكان دون تحقيق أمنيتى أهوال, فقد استوعب "هنرى بيريس" الشعر الأندلسى فى عصر الطوائف تماما, وأحاط بكل مصادره مخطوطه ومطبوعة, فى مكتبات عديدة, وطبعات فى بلاد مختلفة والأمانة المنهجية تقتضى أن نرد النصوص إلى أصولها, شعرا كانت أم نثرا, والوصول إليها فى القاهرة صعب وعسير إن لم يكن من المحال, لأن الكثير منها طبعات أوربية نفدت منذ زمن بعيد.
لقد اقتضى تيسير الإفادة من الهوامش أمام القارئ العربى ان احيله إلى ماصدر منها حديثا, أو كان ممكنا كما هو الحال فى نفح الطيب للمقرى أو إلى الطبعة الحديثة الميسرة أو المحققة,فإذا تعذر الوصول إلى ما أتى به فى هذه الطبعات تركت هوامشه على حالها وأشرت إلى ذلك.
ولايختلف منهجى فى الترجمة هنا عما سرت عليه فى ترجمة كتب خلت, فأنا ألتزم بنص المؤلف ورأيه, مهما كان رايى فيه, وبجمله وبنيتها إذا اتسعت لها العربية, وساغها الذوق العربى, ويمكن ان تفهم دون صعوبة, فلا حذف ولا تجاوز ولاتغيير, ولم أعلق عليه إلا فى حالات قليلة جدا, ولكنى صوبت الأخطاء التى وقع فيها وهى قليلة.
وفى إيراد الشعر التزمت بمنهجه, ولكن الضرورة كانت تتطلب أحيانا أن أزيد فى البدء بيتا تجاوزه المؤلف, لأن فهم ما أورده يتوقف عليه, وكنت أشعر أحيانا ان المؤلف يسقط بيتا أو بيتين وسط ما يأتى به, لصعوبة ترجمتها إلى الفرنسية, أو لأن الذوق الأوربى لا يسيغهما, فأوردتها. وكذلك فى الفصل الخاص بالزهور, فقد خرج المؤلف على مألوف عادته, وارتضى أن ينثر الشعر, وأن يقنع منها بما يصلح شاهدا, مكتفيا بالمضمون, دون أن يترجم الشعر كله, وأحسست أن وراء ذلك صعوبة نقل هذه الأبيات إلى الفرنسية, فجئت بأبيات الشعر نصا, لتكون أمام القارئ العربى, يفهمها ويتذوقها أيضا.
