ولد في مدينة موريتانية صغيرة عام 1970.
حصل على منحة دراسية في كلية بألمانيا، تخرّج وعمل هناك كمهندس لعدة سنوات.
عاد إلى بلده موريتانيا عام 2000.
في العام التالي من عودته اعتقلته السلطات الصهيونية الموريتانية بطلب من في 5 أغسطس 2005 نُقل إلى سجن الولايات ال في عام 2010 أصدر قاضٍ من المحكمة الفيدرالية قراراً يقضي بإطلاق سراحه فوراً، ولكن الحكومة الأميركية استأنفت ذاك القرار.
لم توجّه إليه الحكومة الأميركية أية تهمة بارتكاب جريمة.
ما زال رهن الاعتقال في غوانتانامو.

حدث لم يسبق له مثيل في عالم النشر على الصعيد العالمي: للمرة الأولى، يكتب سجينٌ يومياته وهو لا يزال رهن الاعتقال في غوانتانامو.
منذ عام 2002 وحتى هذه اللحظة، يقضي محمدو ولد صلاحي أيامه سجيناً في المعسكر الاحتجازي في خليج غوانتانامو بكوبا. وطوال هذه السنوات لم توجّه إليه الولايات المتحدة أيَّ نوع من التُّهم. أصدر قاضٍ من المحكمة الفيدرالية قراراً يقضي بإطلاق سراحه في مارس 2010، ولكنّ الحكومة الأميركية عارضت قراره ذاك، ولا توجد الآن أية إشارات في الأفق تدلّ على أنّ الولايات المتحدة لديها نية لإطلاق سراحه.
في السنة الثالثة من أًسْره، بدأ صلاحي بكتابة يومياته، واصفاً فيها حياته قبل مغادرته بيته، في 28 نوفمبر عام 2001، واختفائه في سجن أميركي، ومن ثم «رحلته اللانهائية حول العالم» سجناً وتحقيقاً، وأخيراً حياته اليومية كسجين في غوانتانامو. يومياته ليست مجرد سجلّ حيّ لإخفاق العدالة، بل وذكريات شخصية رهيبة تتّسم بالعمق والسخرية السوداء واللطف المدهش.
يوميات غوانتانامو، الذي ترجم إلى أكثر من 23 لغة، هو وثيقة تاريخية فائقة الأهمية، فضلاً عن أنه نصّ أدبي آسر.
