Les faubourgs historiques de Damas qui sont l’objet de cette étude ont été et demeurent depuis 1979 au cœur des recherches menées à l’Ifpo par le Programme du Vieux Damas. Ils ont été également à l’origine du travail d’analyse méticuleux et raisonné mené pendant plus de dix ans par Yves Roujon et Luc Vilan au cours de leur encadrement pédagogique de « l’Atelier de Damas » aux Écoles d’Architecture de Versailles et de Belleville. Ce long exercice;de terrain a permis d’élaborer et de présenter dans cet ouvrage des propositions alternatives à la dégradation actuelle conduisant à la ruine des structures anciennes ; ces propositions sont mises à la disposition des autorités locales responsables de la protection du patrimoine urbain de Damas. Elles constituent une approche dynamique de la ville intégrant la prise en compte du patrimoine historique dans l’aménagement de Damas extra-muros. Ce travail est un modèle élaboré, mûrement réfléchi, qui peut être étendu (voire partiellement reproductible) à d’autres villes de la région.
