تدور محور أحداث الرواية حول 10 شباب (5 بنات و5 أولاد) زملاء جامعة وأصدقاء من طبقات وفكر مختلف, يلتقون في يوم ظهور نتيجة السنة النهائية (البكالوريوس), وينجحون وينتقلون للحياة العملية ويودعون الحياة النظرية.
ويتفقون علي أنهم سوف يلتقون بعد خمس سنوات تلقائياً في ليلة السنة الخامسة الساعة الثامنة مساء.
حتي لا يؤثر من له نظره تشاؤمية علي المتقائل وممكن أن يصيبوا بعضاً بالإحباط فيفشلوا جميعاً ولا ينجح أحد, وتمر السنوات الخمس بسرعة كبيرة جداً, ويتقابل ويجتمع هؤلاء الشباب الأصدقاء الأولاد والبنات في الليلة الخامسة في اليوم والموعد المتفق عليه, ما عدا بنت واحدة فقط حيث إنها قد أنتقبت, ونجدهم يتكلمون مع بعضهم ويطرحون مشكلاتهم, وأقترحوا علي بعض للخروج من ورطة العزوبية, حيث إن المشكلات المادية لا تنتهي, أن ينشئوا....
