في اليوم التالي لوفاة أمه يوم 25 أكتوبر 1977 , بدأ رولان بارت في كتابة " يوميات الحداد " , كان يكتب بالحبر , وأحياناً بالقلم الرصاص , على بطاقات كان يعدها بنفسه من اوراق ذات مقاس موحد كان يقطعها إلى أربعة أجزاء , وكان يحتفظ دائماً باحتياطي منها على منضدة عمله.
إن المجموعة الكاملة من صندوق البطاقات التي جمعها رولان بارت تحت عنوان ( يوميات الحداد ) موجودة هنا , بطاقة لقد أعدنا ترتيب البطاقات ترتيباً تاريخيا عندما كنا نجد أن هناك عدم انتظام تسرب إليها , إن مقاس البطاقة كان يفرض علينا دائما تحريرا مختصرا , لكن بعض البطاقات كانت مكتوبة على الوجهين , وأحياناً كان النص يتتابع على الوجه فقط لبطاقات كثيرة , وتشير الحروف الأولى التي استخدمها رولان بارت إلى الأشخاص المقربين , وقد حافظنا عليها وتقوم بعض الملاحظات الموجودة في نهاية الكتاب بتوضيح النص أو تفسير بعض التلميحات.
