كل من يقرأ التاريخ يدرك أن القناعات القوية المتقدة في قرن من الزمان عادة ما تبدو سخيفة وعجيبة للقرن التالي , لا توجد حقبة في التاريخ تتراءى لنا كما لا بد أنها تراءت لمن عاشوها فما نعيشة في أي عصر , هو وقع العواطف الجماعية والظروف الاجتماعية علينا , ومن المتعذر تقريباً أن نفضل أنفسنا عنها , وغالباً ما تكون العواطف الجماعية هي تلك التي تلوح كالأنبل والأفضل والأجمل ولكن في غصون عام أو خمسة أعوام أو عقد أو خمسة عقود , سيتساءل الناس ( كيف لهم أن اعتقدوا في ذلك ؟ ) لأن أحداثاً ستكون قد وقعت وأقصت تلك العواطف الجماعية إلى مزبلة التاريخ , إذا جاز لنا القول.
